| Customer Reviews: Great inexpensive combo. March 26, 2009 Kevin Merrill 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Unlike the previous negative review, I have had nothing but success with this rod. I bought the combo from a K-Mart on recommendations and did not have high expectations. I added a new spool of 8 lb fireline. With this combo I have caught plenty smallmouth, largemouth, crappies, sunfish, perch, and one 5 lb catfish. I have used the same line for about a year and a half and have had no problems. This rod and reel have been thrown in the back of my truck, my dads truck, several closets, two garages. Note I said thrown... This thing has had no problems still going strong. For 22-30 dollars you CANNOT beat this combo for beginner or an experienced fisherman. I bought this as a backup and currently use it as my go to rod. GET IT!
Great Rod - Cheap Reel August 23, 2007 D. Guss (Madera, Ca) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
For the price, this is an excellent spinning combo. I like the 2 peice rod, but the Shakespeare Reel was a bit cheesy. The reason being is that you can only reel left handed. It isn't built to be interchangeable for left or right handed usage. I'll use the reel as a spare in case one of my other reels die on me. I bought a better Shakespeare Reel to replace this one. Trolled with the outfit last Saturday running a heavy willow leaf set up at Edison Lake, Ca. and it worked like a champ!

If your wire gets tangled you untangle it. If the tangle is too messy you cut the wire. If it gets sucked into the gears and bearings inside the spool you can sometimes get it out by cutting the wire, but sometimes you have to open up the spool and clean out the wire from the moving parts inside. However, if this is not possible it goes in the trash.
After two minutes using this reel (and rod) the wire got tangled, sucked into to the spool and it was not possible to open and fix. I have been fishing with my 8-year old daughter many times, however, this time all she got out of the experience was that she learned a few new words (but she got no fish). If you like wasting time, money, and enjoy aggravation, buy this product; If not, don't.
